Golden Gate Grooves reviews From Memphis To Greaseland!

Read Joseph Jordan's excellent review of From Memphis To Greaseland in Issue #12 of Golden Gate Grooves.

Tip of the Top, From Memphis to Greaseland by Joseph Jordan

Take four Northern California musicians with an obvious affinity for authentic American roots music, combine them with a stellar ability to sell a song, and you've got Tip of the Top's third terrific CD, "From Memphis to Greaseland." Producer and the group's outstanding bass player Frank DeRose and cohorts insist on getting to the true heart of their songs, 13 tracks that make this 55-minute recording a thrilling addition to their already impressive repertoire.

The four hip cats of TOTT [as they're referred to locally] have turned the greater Bay Area on its musical ear, bursting onto the scene just 3 years ago, and ringing with them a love for original-sounding music, and a superb feel for the '50s blues and roots music that inspires them. As much juke joint heroics as classic blues ("The Sportin' Life" and "One Way Out") with more than a little rock and roll (DeRose's "The Night Is Young").

Energetic harpist Akarsha "Aki" Kumar and guitarist "Little" Jonny Lawton take the lead vocals throughout, with a separate strength that combines into a powerful whole. They are both accomplished musicians and play off each other well, whether it be with several call-andresponses heard throughout the album, or in sheer ability. Recording the CD live in the studio helped maintain the intrinsic feel for the music the group abundantly displays.

Lawton jumps on his tunes with abandon, traversing a mean slide as well as showing his dexterity in single-note playing prowess. Kumar can take props for tackling Little Walter's instrumental "Rocker" with not only reverence for Jacobs' jumping composition, but a genuine feel for early Chicago Blues harmonica. His vocals are also wonderfully expressive, such on the groover, "She's Fine." Drummer Carlos Velasco holds down the beat with a very minimal kit and is just right for this band's sound.

Engineered by creative blues mastermind, and head honcho of Greaseland Studios in Campbell, California, Chris "Kid" Andersen, the CD just bursts out of the speakers good for bawlin', braggin', or boogieing. Bay Area pianist Sid Morris and guitarist Johnny "Cat" Soubrand, as well as Andersen, contribute instrumentation to several tracks. Seven of the cuts are originals and the other six are well chosen for the band's musical sensitivities. Charting all over the place as of this writing, the men have nowhere to go but national at this point, they're that good. (They were TGGBS' entry in The Blues Foundation's 2011 International Blues Challenge, where they reached the semifinals.)

~~ October Blues Happenings ~~

www.tipofthetopmusic.com

Hello folks,

Tip of the Top has some smokin' hot shows coming up this October. Scroll down for our monthly calendar, but check out this special announcement before you do!

As many of you already know, Tip of the Top won Round #4 of the Golden Gate Blues Society-sponsored IBC challenge and will now be battling it out with top notch blues talent at the Bay Area finals on Sunday, Nov 7th. Venue details are now available! The finals will be held at the beautiful and spacious Club Illusions in Palo Alto from 4-8pm.

We'd like to request every one of our fans to come on out and vote for us at this event. Your vote is critical in helping determine the winner and could send us on our way as official Bay Area representatives at the finals in Memphis. Winners of the Bay Area edition will also get a RARE opportunity to open for blues legend Robert Cray at the newly re-opened Fox Theater on Nov 12.

Nov 7th is guaranteed to be a killer event featuring plenty of high-energy blues from some of the finest bands in the area. Don't miss out!!

(A quick shout-out to event sponsor, The Golden Gate Blues Society, which has worked very hard to put this series of contests together. If you dig the kind of music we play and would like to support the Bay Area blues scene, be sure to sign up to be a TGGBS member at the show or on their website!)

Monterey Bay Blues Festival 2010

by Rachel K.

Last Saturday, Tip of the Top had the opportunity to perform at the 25th annual Monterey Bay Blues Festival. And just like last year's appearance at the San Jose Jazz Festival, they were excited to promote a brand new CD. Rock Tonight is the band's second album, with a lot of original tunes and a handful of other fan favorites to showcase their rich blues roots.

The guys usually stand out from the crowd, and this event was no exception. Dressed sharply as always, their vintage sound was unique among acts that showed more rock, R&B, and soul influence. (And as far as I can tell, Tip of the Top is still the only group to brave the stage with a single drum.)

They had quite a few loyal fans in attendance, but the festival atmosphere was distinctly different from the band's other performances. While they often energize audiences at local clubs and restaurants, it was even more encouraging to see the appreciation from blues enthusiasts in an evironment so focused on the music. Many of them couldn't resist the urge to get up and dance, others were enthralled by the sound of Jonny's slide guitar, and all were caught up in the toe-tapping rhythm. The infectious sound even caught patrons beyond the President's Stage as they dined on their festival fare of hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, and funnel cakes.

It should be no surprise, then, that the new album got such a good reception among this crowd. But after watching the group pour their heart & soul into the recording sessions, I could tell they found it extremely rewarding to see how eagerly the audience snapped up "Rock Tonight" along with their debut CD "Depot Street Blues". And while the band only had an hour on stage, the number of people lined up waiting for autographs after the show proved it was more than enough to win them many new fans. We hope those will become familiar faces as Tip of the Top continues its appearances around the Bay Area in the months to come.

Recording Session - Behind the Scenes

Tip of the Top recently hit the recording studio to begin work on our second CD release. Tip of the Top band wife Rachel Kumar provides a behind the scenes look at the day's events...

Tip of the Top's Recording Session, 3/14/2010
by Rachel Kumar

A couple weeks ago, Tip of the Top returned to the studio to record their second album. I tagged along to take some photos of the band and get a behind-the-scenes look at how the band translates the essence of their sound into a recorded audio performance. One of the major differences you can spot right away is that the band is not wearing their signature suits! While they always dress sharp to bring a touch of class to their live shows, here they opted for comfort since they would be working in the studio for several hours.

Another difference is that I finally had an opportunity to get some clear photos of Carlos. When they're performing on a stage, Carlos is often positioned behind the other band members, and so deeply focused on his drumming that it's hard to capture a good shot. Here, he smiles as he listens to the playback of something they've just recorded.

I was really impressed with the band's dedication as they worked through the all-day session, listening intently to each track and recording as many takes as they needed to get every aspect of the songs "just right." It was clear that they care about the music and about producing an album that is true to their unique sound. I enjoyed seeing the band in action, and I'm excited to hear how the final CD turns out. You can see all of the photos on the Flickr set available here:
I was really impressed with the band's dedication as they worked through the all-day session, listening intently to each track and recording as many takes as they needed to get every aspect of the songs "just right." It was clear that they care about the music and about producing an album that is true to their unique sound. I enjoyed seeing the band in action, and I'm excited to hear how the final CD turns out. You can see all of the photos on the Flickr set available here:
